Drepung Monastic University, one of the ‘great three’ Gelug gompas (monasteries) and known as the second Nalanda University, was one of the most important centres for learning, contemplation and practice of Buddhism in Tibet. Founded in 1416, the monastery was said to have been prophesied by the Buddha Shakyamuni. In the early twentieth century, it housed over 7,000 monks. Drepung Gomang is one of seven monastic colleges in Drepung, now re-established in exile in Karnataka State, South India.
