WINTER TEACHINGS 2016-2017: Finding Peace and Happiness in Everyday Life
WINTER TEACHING: BODHISATTVA’S WAY OF LIFE

TEACHING ONE: Awakening the Mind to an Understanding of its True Nature

Making a strong Aspiration is fundamental for cultivating the mind, in order to awaken the deep inner potential of compassion and love for all beings with equanimity.

We start by beginning to free our Minds of negative tendencies; also developing wholesome thoughts and experiences for guarding our Mind.

It is not a question of reward, punishment or guilt but of Mindful vigilance, awareness and restraint; removing the obstacles to our happiness and the happiness of others, and following the Dharma teachings.

We learn that right and wrong are not inherently existent, but dependently arisen.

The Venerable Acharya Panchen Ötrul Rinpoche will teach on finding Peace and Happiness in Daily Life using the text:

The Bodhisattva’s Way of Life by Shantideva

Where would I possibly find enough leather

With which to cover the surface of the earth?
But (just) leather on the soles of my shoes
Is equivalent to covering the earth with it.unnamed

Likewise it is not possible for me
To restrain the external course of things;
But should I restrain this mind of mine
What would be the need to restrain all else?

–excerpted from Shantideva’s The Bodhisattva’s Way of Life

This text is the essence and at the Heart of the Tibetan Buddhist Path. It explains how step by step, by training and transforming the mind, our own full human potential can be gained.  It is a very beautiful text, and of great fundamental benefit to any one wishing to develop their own spirituality; it also is of value for everyone seeking to be free of problems and fear.

Ven. Rinpoche will teach on how it is possible to gently integrate these teachings into our everyday life. By guiding us through the vital points of this seminal text, Ven. Rinpoche will explain clearly how we are able to achieve both present and future happiness in our lives, with confidence and ease in each moment.

A Bodhisattva is that person who aspires, through commitment and determination, to reach the highest of all Spiritual achievements: the Infinite Compassion and Wisdom of the Enlightened Mind. This is achieved not solely for one’s own benefit, but for the benefit of all beings with total equanimity. The Bodhisattva serves as a light for those in darkness, bringing compassionate wisdom to every relationship in the world and to all beings they encounter.

As we slowly learn to actualise these teachings in our life, the mind becomes relaxed, less stressed and more peaceful, fostering a sense of deep contentment, well-being and happiness.
