‘Once a wealthy man met Milarepa, a Tibetan yogi who lived in a cave in the mountains with no possessions whatsoever. Milarepa said to him “I’m so peaceful living here like this”.
The man was inspired to do exactly as Milarepa and went to give away all his possessions and go live in a remote cave. His friend said to him, “You don’t need to give everything away at this moment. Just try it first and see how it goes”. He said “No, no. I will give everything away”.
And so he gave everything away and went to live in the mountains in a cave. After a few days of cold and hunger he began suffering and lamenting, “What have I done? Milarepa the pauper has made me a pauper as well!”
To live like Milarepa requires a lot of practice. External comforts provide some happiness, but internal happiness and satisfaction derived from practice are more reliable. No matter how harsh the external world is, through practising Dharma one’s mind can remain peaceful and compassionate.’
The Venerable Panchen Ötrul Rinpoche.
