‘Shantideva told a story about a man who once met another man stretching a piece of leather across the ground. He said, “What are you doing?”

The other man said, “I’m sick and tired of walking and standing on sharp stones and thorns, so I’ve decided to cover the ground in leather to protect my feet.”

“That’s very interesting”, said the first man, “But wouldn’t it be easier if instead you took two small pieces of leather and strapped them to the soles of your feet?”

Other people’s behaviour can disturb our minds. We can’t control their behaviour but we can change how we deal with the disturbing emotions arising in our own minds.’

The Venerable Panchen Ötrul Rinpoche.
