‘We can’t control external conditions. If it’s cold outside, better to warm our room or put on extra clothes. Similarly with our minds. We can’t control external conditions that disturb our minds. We can however change how we respond to these external conditions. As Shantideva said, we can’t put leather all over the earth to make it smooth for us to walk on. We can instead put leather on our feet to make it easier to walk over the earth.’
