‘The five precepts help in developing ethical discipline. One time a Lama asked his student whose profession involved stealing to give it up. He said, “No, no, I can’t do it because it’s my livelihood.” 

Then the Lama said to him, “Oh, okay. You don’t need to give that one up. Maybe you can give up lying.” His student decided to be really committed to giving up lying.

Then afterwards when he went to do his job he realised he could no longer do it because he was lying all the time.’
